Anaïs Mitchell Adds New Tour Dates

Young Man in America Out Now
on Wilderland Records/Thirty Tigers

“Ms. Mitchell’s perspective rises above the narrowly personal; she’s not writing confessionals or self-absorbed reveries. In songs suffused with myth, her first-person lyrics speak of archetypal fathers and mothers, sailors and shepherds, gods and goddesses.” —New York Times

“It’s hard for me to listen to Anais Mitchell's “Coming Down” without getting a lump in my throat. Mitchell’s expressive voice takes cliched phrases like “nothing gonna stop me now” and turns them into something wholly personal and sorrow-filled.” —NPR All Songs Considered

“Her voice is sweet, her message is potent. Singer songwriter Anaïs Mitchell’s new album Young Man In America is about a gender and a generation abandoned and exposed. It’s real raw and rhythmic.” —NPR “On Point”

“Her penchant for aural experimentation sets her apart from her many peers.” —The Philadelphia Inquirer

“Anaïs Mitchell writes songs that are as intimate as conversations and as rich in detail as short stories.” —The Boston Globe

“Young Man In America slots in so perfectly with the best of Mitchell’s work; by seamlessly enmeshing the personal, the political, and the universal.” —American Songwriter

Young Man’s emotions are the soul of the record, with carefully crafted instrumentation adding a relaxed personality and flair to each of songs.” —Paste Magazine

In support of her new Wilderland Records/Thirty Tigers release Young Man In America Vermont-based artist Anaïs Mitchell adds new tour dates. Mitchell continues her work with producer/arranger Todd Sickafoose, who assembled some of NYC’s most sought-after rock and experimental jazz players including guitarist Adam Levy, violinist Jenny Scheinman, and drummers Andrew Borger and Kenny Wollesen to work on the record. Chris Thile of Punch Brothers appears on mandolin as well as Jefferson Hamer and Rachel Ries in a harmonic chorus. Michael Chorney, who scored Mitchell’s last release Hadestown and produced her previous albums (2007’s The Brightness and 2004’s Hymns of the Exiled), makes a guest appearance on guitar. Mitchell continues her U.S. tour performing Hadestown in selected cities. See dates on below.

Young Man
follows Mitchell’s critically beloved 2010 folk opera Hadestown, a modern retelling of the Orpheus myth set in a Depression era America. The album, which features guest singers Justin Vernon (Bon Iver), Ani Difranco, and Ben Knox-Miller (the Low Anthem), landed her on numerous “Best of 2010” lists including The Guardian, The Sunday Times and The Observer.

Young Man is not an opera, but it is an epic tale with multiple protagonists. As a songwriter Mitchell takes on the voices of different characters, men as well as women. The hero of the title track is “a restless character on a feverish hunt for pleasure and success. Alcohol, fame, money, sex—nothing satisfies him,” says Mitchell. “He’s desirous and very sad.” This character, and the record as a whole, was inspired in part by the every-man-for-himself side of America that she glimpsed during our recent recession.
