Ramseur Records will release Bombadil’s A Buzz, a Buzz on April 29. This is the first full-length release from the Durham, NC natives, who Magnet calls “a drunker, circus-reared version of The Band.” Bombadil are currently on a nationwide tour and will continue following the release of the album.

Formed by Duke University alumni Daniel Michalak, Bryan Rahija and Stuart Robinson, Bombadil draws on a unique mélange of influences and a variety of instrumentation. The band initially formed while Michalak and Rahija were studying abroad in Bolivia when the folk music indigenous to the region lit a creative spark and inspired the two to begin writing songs. That influence, paired with their collective backgrounds in Piedmont blues, psychedelic rock and Robinson’s background as a classical pianist, stands as the driving force behind the band’s unique sound.

Bombadil’s instrumentation consists of a core of electric and acoustic guitars, bass, piano and drums, complimented by harmonica, xylophone, organ, synth, saxophone, trumpet, viola, charango, glockenspiel, accordion, recorder and zampona. This musical diversity allows their songs to range from straightforward rock to Bolivian waltzes to piano-driven laments, which Durham’s Independent Weekly says “emanates optimism.”

Bombadil has been known to put on a highly energetic live performance, with each band member wielding multiple instruments and occasionally playing two instruments at the same time. Additionally, the band members often perform while wearing vintage suits and fedoras imported from Bolivia. Such a performance caught the attention of Dolphus Ramseur, head of Ramseur Records (home to such acts as The Avett Brothers and the everybodyfields), who immediately signed the band to his label. "Making the show entertaining is our goal. I like making the show more visually appealing than anything," says band member Michalak. "It's important for someone to really experience a concert instead of just watching it."
