EDIE BRICKELL’S THE GADDABOUTS #4 MOST ADDED ARTIST AT AAA RADIO
“Brickell’s breezy, breathy vocals are still among the most instantly recognizable in pop music.” —USA Today
The Gaddabouts, the new project from renowned songwriter and musician Edie Brickell, is the #4 most added record at AAA Radio. This is just the latest achievement for Brickell, who celebrated the release of two new albums this year on her own independent label, racecarLOTTA Records. Both releases are receiving widespread critical acclaim—The Huffington Post describes Edie Brickell as, “…sly observations, coffee-house cool vocals, and idiosyncratic melodies…” while, of The Gaddabouts, Relix magazine heralds, “…Brickell’s playful, finely honed lyrics, smooth honey-toned vocals and the band’s mostly laid-back grooves make every track shine.”
In celebration of the releases, Brickell recently performed a series of select shows—in January, she joined Iron & Wine at Radio City Music Hall and, in April, The Gaddabouts made their live debut at Carnegie’s Zankel Hall as part of the WFUV concert series. Moreover, she recently performed as part of the 2011 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival alongside Arcade Fire, Lucinda Williams, Aaron Neville and many more.
Produced by Charlie Sexton, Brickell began writing her self-titled solo album during her 2003 tour in support of Volcano. She explains, “The first three songs for the solo album were recorded on a day off during the tour. They were all new songs and I wanted to record them while they were fresh and we were feeling them. Too many times I had waited months, even years to record a song and by that time, the feeling was gone and the song came out like a memory instead of an experience. So any time I got a batch of five or six songs, I’d get together with the band and record them while they were new. I wanted to make a record where every song communicated a strong and true energy.”
The solo record was then put hold to focus on The Gaddabouts, a new project featuring Steve Gadd, Pino Palladino and Andy Fairweather-Low. The group’s forthcoming debut is composed of material written by Brickell over the past decade as well as songs written with the band in the studio the very day of recording. Initially conceived of in 2000, the project began when longtime admirers Gadd and Brickell recorded demos together and decided to form a band. Brickell loved the laid-back vibe Gadd created in the studio and asked him to also produce the record. In addition to the duo, Gadd asked his friends, renowned guitarist Andy Fairweather-Low and legendary bassist Pino Palladino, to join the group. Their union was joyful and effortless and half of the songs were recorded during the first session.
Both conceived of and developed throughout the past decade, the two resulting projects were only coincidently finished at the same time. Of the synchronicity, Brickell notes, “it’s like a horse race; both projects are kicking in the stall and I gotta let ‘em run.”
