Love at the Bottom of the Sea is out now on Merge Records and has been garnering critical acclaim since its March 6 release: The Boston Globe declares “it’s [Stephin] Merritt at his wry best” and Spin says “Merritt is…a dour clown born to shred with wit…the efficiency of his drollness has grown uncanny, in fact, and the creepiness of its perfection is part of the fun.” USA Today proclaims “brevity is the soul of wit, and whimsy, on this latest effort from Magnetic Fields,” while Blackbook Magazine calls Love at the Bottom of the Sea “the band's most consistently entertaining album since 69 Love Songs.” Love at the Bottom of the Sea is The Magnetic Fields’ tenth full-length album and their first release of new material with Merge since 1999’s highly acclaimed 69 Love Songs. The band played a successful run of North American tour dates this spring in support of the album and is currently on tour in Europe.

See below for more recent critical praise for Love at the Bottom of the Sea

Love at the Bottom of the Sea explores many facets of forbidden romance, particularly in the delightful, album-opening pairing of ‘God Wants Us to Wait’ and ‘Andrew in Drag’… the conflicts play out with just the right mix of ruefulness and playfulness.” - NPR

Love at the Bottom of the Sea finds the band once again exploring the theme of failed love affairs using biting lyricism, thanks to leader and songwriter Stephin Merritt, but this time with added synth…all of the songs on the album are under three minutes, allowing them to be punchy and not overdone.” – Associated Press

“It's quite possibly their strongest record in years, filled with tuneful melodies that both quicken the pulse and confound the heart.” – Huffington Post

“The humor wouldn’t be as sharp if the arrangements didn’t set up the jokes. And while the Magnetic Fields pose as indie rockers, internal rhymes like ‘Let Laramie take care o’ me till they bury me’ suggest they’ve learned something from rappers and honky-tonkers, too.” – Rolling Stone

“Now in their third decade of mutating indie and electro pop into extravagant, concise and witty post-Broadway showstoppers, the Magnetic Fields just put out their 11th LP, Love at the Bottom of the Sea. On it, Stephin Merrit remains in fine form, having composed imaginative songs about a straight man falling in love with a friend in drag and the self-explanatory ‘All She Cares About is Mariachi.’” – Village Voice

“The album's highlights are many, further proving that Stephin Merritt is one of the finest songwriters alive.” – Under the Radar

“With Love at the Bottom of the Sea, Stephin Merritt seems to have stopped thinking so much and focused on what he does best—writing infectiously catchy pop songs—while returning to the synth-laden sound that the band is well known for.” –Filter magazine

“Standouts ‘Andrew In Drag’ and ‘Your Girlfriend’s Face’ are among the best in Merritt’s massive canon.” - Prefix

“Another collection of charming, infectious pop songs—a solid addition to the band’s expansive catalog.” – Consequence of Sound
